West House is a stunning, late 18th century house located on the beachfront at Elie, with a superb view out over the Firth of Forth. With six beautiful bedrooms and a string of stylish public rooms, it is ideal for family get-togethers or for groups celebrating something special.
West House’s accommodation (sleeping up to 16) is laid out over three floors, each room having its own truly unique charms. The six bedrooms (five of which are ensuite) all, except one, have views out over the bay.
The ground floor houses a large, well-equipped kitchen that opens out onto the secluded garden, a snug sitting room and a cloakroom big enough to house all your boots, buckets and spades.
The Library, Drawing Room and Sun Room are on the first floor, alongside two of West House’s three double bedrooms, any of which would provide a wonderful retreat for parents from the joyous mayhem of a group family holiday.
Children will love the airy double bunk room on the second floor, with its two sets of white painted bunk beds (sleeping four). Here, too, can be found two twin bedrooms and the third double. Trundle beds can be used, if needed, for two further children.
There is plenty of storage space throughout this spacious house and enough window seats for everyone to while away an afternoon with a book and a beach view.
The wooden floors downstairs also make it very practical when bringing children back from the beach.
West House’s vibrant, spacious garden is influenced by North African design, its rounded walls studded with shell mosaic.
There are two sitting areas (outside the kitchen and by the BBQ area respectively), and a lovely lawn that provides plenty of space for children to play.
Fully walled-in, the garden is private, safe and something of a sun trap. It is also accessible from the road, providing off-street parking, should you wish, although there is free parking opposite the house where you can almost always find a space.
Towels and all linen is provided, together with beach towels and rugs. There are buckets and spades and four tennis rackets, alongside a variety of board games and DVDs for rainy days or cosy evenings.
Situated at the southern end of Fife’s idyllic East Neuk, picturesque Elie, with its long village green and eclectic architecture dating back to the 17th century, is set around a curve of golden sand, peppered with rock pools at low tide.
With its genial microclimate, Elie – famous for its beach and its beach cricket - has everything for an enjoyable summer holiday. But there’s something equally alluring in spending a cosy weekend watching the winter storms whip up the Firth of Forth from one of West House’s comfy window seats.
For those wanting something more active than watching the tide roll in and out, tennis, fantastic sailing and all manner of watersports can be found locally. You could even hire a bike and spend a lazy day cycling up through the East Neuk’s historic harbour villages. Golfers are spoilt with Fife’s world class golf courses, and St. Andrews, the home of golf, is just 12 miles up the coast.
Elie's well-stocked deli, a minute's walk from West House, caters for everything from a picnic to dinner. And eating out is a joy, with local options ranging from fish and chips at the Ship Inn overlooking the bay, to Sangsters, the local Michelin-starred restaurant.
